Hanford ARC – Background and General Information

Doug Hanford founded Hanford ARC in 1984 with the goal of providing high quality, specialized restoration services to a market which at the time was in its infancy. Doug is a licensed landscape architect and a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC). Since our inception, Hanford ARC has completed extensive and varied habitat restoration projects for a long list of clients throughout the United States. These projects have included numerous applications of cutting edge technology in the fields of soil bioengineering and habitat restoration.

We currently offer a full range of service in wetland mitigation and restoration, stream construction, soil bioengineering, revegetation, park construction, and erosion control. Our management team has the specialized knowledge and technical skills to direct project construction with attention to accuracy and detail while maintaining cost effectiveness. Our dedicated field crews work to complete projects in a timely, professional manner.

Hanford ARC has developed an extensive, diverse list of projects constructed over the past 25 years. During this time, we have seen the market for restoration projects expand laterally with diversifying techniques, and by volume, both in the number and size of projects. In order to meet the need for qualified contractors, we have steadily and thoughtfully expanded our capacity, while aggressively pursuing distinct project types to add to our knowledge base. These project types include the following:

Stream Restoration and Re-construction
  • Complete stream realignment
  • Bioengineered bank stabilization (vegetated soil lifts, brush mattresses, live wattles, live booms, live crib walls, emergent rolls)
  • In-channel rock structures (vanes, weirs, deflectors, gabions, and toe protection)
  • Installation of large woody debris
  • Natural fiber blankets and revetments
Wetland Restoration and Mitigation
  • Seasonal and perennial wetland construction
  • Vernal pool restoration and mitigation
Revegetation
  • Woodland and grassland planting
  • Riparian habitat planting
  • Drill seeding
  • Harvest and propagation
Public Facilities Construction
  • Park construction
  • Park renovation
  • Ballfield construction
  • Ballfield renovation
  • Schoolyard field renovation
Landscaping
  • Private and public facilities landscaping
  • Xeriscaping and conventional landscaping
  • Irrigation system schematic design and installation
Conservation and Other Services
  • Hydroseeding and drill seeding
  • Slope stabilization
  • Sediment control (silt fence, straw wattles, erosion control fabric, etc.)
  • Stormwater management facilities construction
  • Burned area stabilization and restoration

We have expanded our resource base to accommodate the growing need for qualified contractors in the field of restoration. Changing and expanding regulatory requirements set by lead agencies require a flexible schedule, to which we adapt on an annual basis depending upon the projects we contract to build. We maintain year-round capability to construct projects that are faced with stringent regulatory deadlines.

Human Resources

Our most valuable assets are our employees. We employ year-round construction crews with a very low turnover. In addition to the skills and knowledge to build parks and other public works/landscape type projects, our crews have developed specialty skills in the restoration field that include knowledge of soil bioengineering techniques (e.g. proper willow harvest and installation, material requirements and structure installation), revegetation techniques (e.g. browse control methods, and irrigation scheduling), and stabilization and restoration techniques (e.g. hand grading and rock placement, hydroseeding, and erosion control blanket installation).

Hanford ARC operators have specialized skills for restoration projects, using heavy equipment to perform exacting tasks in sensitive environments. These personnel have operated equipment and completed restoration work in anadromous fish spawning streams, alpine streams and meadows, seasonal and perennial wetlands, vernal pools and rare and endangered plant habitat.

The majority of our field crews have served 5 to 20 years with Hanford ARC.

Financial Resources

Hanford ARC has a strong financial history. Our ethical business practices have built a stable base upon which to grow. Only upon success of trial projects have we expanded into new aspects of the restoration field. Additionally, we have established a reputation of being a stable and reliable company, which has allowed us to continue to serve long-time clients, while establishing new relationships.
