Vernal Pool Construction and Consolidated Wetland Mitigation
Sonoma County, CA
Cobblestone Construction
Fall 1999 - Spring 2002
Cobblestone Construction, Inc., Fall 1999 – Spring 2002. Hanford ARC was contracted for two vernal pool projects on Sonoma County Airport property, north of the City of Santa Rosa. Both projects were designed by LSA Associates of Point Richmond, Ca., as consolidated mitigation sites.
The first project, constructed in the fall of 1999, established 44 vernal pools and enhanced four swales on a 15-acre parcel at the northeast corner of the airport. Hanford ARC mobilized following rough grading and establishment of the vernal pool locations. Services included spreading salvaged topsoil, fine grading (0.10-foot tolerance) to achieve optimal pool depth, swale enhancement, soil preparation, and hydroseeding. A challenge of this project was creating pools with a natural appearance on a site with significant topographical relief.
Construction began in the fall of 2000 on a second project that created 10 large vernal pools immediately north of the airport. Again, Hanford ARC mobilized following rough grading to establish accurate depths and shape the pools. Construction continued in the fall and winter of 2001 with the removal of agricultural irrigation and drainage, pool fine grading and water testing for the establishment of proper hydrology. |
