Alamo Creek Revegetation

San Ramon, CA

Shapell Industries
2003-2004

Hanford ARC has contracted with Shapell Industries to install three phases of restoration work on Alamo Creek. Designed by John Nicol and Associates, with biological design input and monitoring by LSA Associates, the work is part of a comprehensive habitat enhancement project and mitigation for new housing construction on the eastern edge of the City of San Ramon. The revegetation area spans approximately 40 acres and 3,600 linear feet along both the west branch and main stem of Alamo Creek.

Hanford ARC installed approximately 18,000 native riparian and upland species. The plants are primarily woody shrubs and trees, including oaks, toyon, coffeeberry, buckeye, coyote brush, bay, and willow. Wetland plants and some herbaceous container plants were also installed. Container sizes ranged from deepots to 15-gallon.

All of the upland plantings on the slopes above Alamo Creek received a semi-permanent irrigation system, installed per the Contra Costa County standards for conventional landscaping. The extensive irrigation system waters all plants installed, except the wetland plants, with bubblers and drip systems below the 100 year flood level.

Hanford ARC also contracted on an annual basis for maintenance of the revegetation areas. This work includes hand weeding, spraying and repairs to the irrigation system. Hanford ARC is also providing invasive plant removal services on a large area of both the Main Branch and West Branch of Alamo Creek.
