Devils Slide Exploratory Drilling, Stabilization and Restoration

Pacifica, CA

Caltrans, District 4
2002 - 2007

This project involved test boring as part of the Devils Slide bypass tunnel project, which is several miles long, with the North Portal just south of Pacifica, Ca. 29 remote drilling points were established in the headlands over the tunnel location.

Hanford ARC provided clearing, demolition and grading services for access to, and establishment of these pads. Following drilling, Hanford ARC restored each sites’ natural contours and stabilized all access roads and drill pads with various erosion control techniques, including fabric, fiber rolls, silt fence, water bars, and retaining walls. Hanford ARC eradicated pampas grass from several areas between the drill pads. The weed was excavated with a tracked excavator and hauled to a load-out site with a tracked dump truck. Seed was collected for the coastal scrub plant community in the fall and plants were grown for revegetation of these sites in the winter of 2003.

The project includes one year of erosion control maintenance and three years of revegetation maintenance following planting.
