Memorial Park and Ball Field Renovation
Albany, CA
City of Albany
Summer/Fall, 2007
Hanford ARC constructed this project along with Ocean View Park (described separately) as part of a pair of contracts with the City of Albany. The project scope included stripping and replacement of a play field, new infields for the play and practice fields, a complete irrigation system replacement and renovation of an old drainage system. Approximately 10,000 SF of concrete and asphalt paving were removed and replaced. New amenities included drinking fountains, backstops, dugouts and bleachers. The highlight of this project was the demolition and restoration of a historic stone fireplace and brick community barbeque. The barbeque was built as a gift to the city in 1974 by Albany's American Legion Post 292. Upon demolition, our crew found time capsule information placed into the structure by its builders....business cards, a newletter of Post 292 and other items to identify those involved in the BBQ's history. These items were returned to the City for prosterity. The stone fireplace was also an historic piece and was carefully dismantled to salvage the stones. Hanford stored the stones as well as the commerative plaque for later re-building.
Underground work included tying into an existing drainage system and replacing drain lines. Hanford ARC installed a total of 810 LF of storm drain with clean-outs, and added 30 LF of sanitary sewer line to an existing system. To minimize impact and possible damage to a very old and treasured existing tree, directional drilling was used in one area of the underground pipe installation. The irrigation system for the new sod and planting areas included approximately 1,000 LF of mainline and 1,000 LF of lateral lines. A Weathermatic onsite weather station was installed which is controlled offsite by the city. The system monitors precipitation from a satelite weather station and was chosen by the city of Albany to minimize water use.
The field renovation required removal of the top 6” of soil. The City’s environmental standards included segregation of soil and vegetative debris for recycling. This standard also applied to the asphalt and concrete demolition. The finished field and surrounding landscaping included approximately 82,000 SF of sod and 2,000 plants.
