Ocean View Park Renovation
Albany, CA
City of Albany
Summer/Fall, 2007
Hanford ARC constructed this project along with Memorial Park (described separately) as part of a pair of contracts with the City of Albany. The scope of Ocean View Park Renovation included upgrading the existing ballfield and play area, and renovation of a previously unused area into community gardens with ADA access. A new picnic area with barbeques, tables and benches and a new play structure were added to enhance the park.
The project site includes a teen center, tennis courts, play fields and a redwood grove surrounding a picnic area. A significant challenge of this project was to maintain access to the teen center, tennis courts and play fields during construction. The project included electrical work, grading and trenching between the teen center and an elementary school, making safety coordination with the City for public access a primary concern.
Demolition included removal of 30 redwood trees within the picnic area, and removal of existing barbeques, tables and benches. It may be interesting to note that Hanford ARC carefully salvaged and stockpiled the redwood trees, with the roots attached, for reuse in log structures on stream restoration projects. Approximately 13,000 SF of asphalt paving was removed and recycled. Hanford ARC installed two drinking fountains and hose bibs installed in the community garden. A new reclaimed water irrigation system included 620 LF of mainline and 2500 LF lateral line was installed and separated from the domestic water system trenches.
The scope of electrical work included new ball field lights retrofitted to four existing poles, and ten new 10’ lights and poles added to the parking lot and picnic areas. Also, uplights for the new park entry sign were installed. Hanford ARC installed a Musco timed lighting controller and Astronomic clock, which required a new main switchboard and service panel.
The new community garden was surrounded by a vinyl-coated mesh fence, with a wooden gate and arbor located at the south side of the project. Garden features include twelve raised plots, planting beds, benches and tables, and two ADA accessible plots. Adjacent to the teen center, we installed a sod volleyball and tetherball court for the center’s use. We retrofitted the back deck of the teen center with a set of wooden stairs to provide access to the new amenities and built a concrete graffiti wall. Hardscape included 27,000 SF of concrete paving and placement of 150 CY of Candlestick mix for the infield. Landscaping consisted of 1499 plants and twelve 24” box trees. The park was opened to the community December 2007.
