Lower Redwood Creek Restoration at Muir Beach

Golden Gate National Recreation Area, CA

In July 2009 Hanford ARC was awarded an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity Contract through a proposal process with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy (GGNPC) for creek and wetland work within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA).  The first task order under this contract was the first phase of a stream and tidal lagoon restoration at Muir Beach.  Redwood Creek, which flows to the ocean at Muir Beach, was restricted through historical development for ranching and recreation.  Impacts included levees, lagoon filling, and channel relocation.  The Muir Beach project, planned by the National Park Service, is a comprehensive multi-phase restoration including lagoon expansion, fill removal, channel realignment and bridge replacement.

Fernandez Ranch Creek Restoration and Public Access

Martinez, Ca Fernandez Ranch Creek Restoration

Hanford ARC was selected to construct several major components of the Fernandez Ranch Creek Restoration and Public Access project.  Our scope included trail construction, minor creek restoration, revegetation, and public staging and picnic area construction.  Following the trail construction, creek work and grading, we seeded native grass, and placed straw, coir fabric and wattles on the slopes.  We then installed approximately 7,000 container plants and seeds (acorns and buckeye) on the slopes and at the top of the bank.  More...

Winter Creek Stabilization & Enhancement Project

University of California, BerkeleyWinter Creek Stabilization, Berkeley

Winter Creek is a seasonal tributary to Strawberry Creek, which flows through the UC Berkeley Campus. The project reach of Winter Creek flows through the Mather Grove of redwoods in the UC Botanical Garden.  The upper watershed has been altered through increased impervious surfaces and drainage consolidation.  The channel through the redwood grove experienced recent rapid incision, causing bank sloughing, slides and rotation, which in turn threatened the redwood grove and associated facilities. Lower Tubbs Island/Tolay Creek Marsh Enhancement

Sonoma County, CaLower Tubbs Island

Historically, Lower Tubbs Island was managed for duck hunting with levees, berms, tide gates and drainage channels to control tidal influence.  In 1978 San Pablo Bay NWR refuge acquired the land and began to plan for enhancement and restoration of a more natural tidal marsh.  The project we constructed in the fall 0f 2009 included several goals based on improving connectivity to the adjacent baylands to increase the tidal prism within Tubbs Island. Giacomini Wetland Restoration

Point Reyes National Seashore, CAGiacomini Wetland Restoration

10 years in planning, the completed Giacomini project restored 12% of California’s outer coastal wetlands and 50% of Tomales Bay wetlands.  The Giacomini Dairy leveed a tidal zone of lower Lagunitas Creek in the 1940’s to reclaim the land for cattle grazing.  The second phase of this restoration, constructed by Hanford ARC, consisted of removal of approximately 3 miles of levees, construction of new tidal channels including the 50’ wide lower Tomasini Creek, backfilling drainage ditches, removal of dairy infrastructure, and construction of marshplain and floodplain benches. More...
